Review of the 2007 SoundON Festival

This short four-minute work is highly contrapuntal in its texture. Initially its appearance might seem to be modernistic, which, however, is a deception due to the main characteristic feature of the work: a repeating major third of c - e, mainly heard in the flute’s lowest register. This third becomes an even larger reference to tonality halfway the composition, going back and forth between major and minor and balancing on the verge of A minor. It is an anti modernist comment in a modernistic environment, establishing a personal view of a universal style.

Kwart was first performed in 2007 at the University of Bristol by the Kokoro Ensemble. Four was composed for and first performed by San Diego New Music’s NOISE during the 2007 SoundON Festival at the Athenaeum Library in La Jolla, California. It was one of the Winning compositions for this festival.
